I'm probably being really silly here but how do you actually set the password on the password protection template? At my wits end trying to figure it out

Hello Nick,

Password Page can be added to your project, add password in the right property panel or in your Page settings, save and preview.
Password Template is used only in CMS like WordPress/Joomla. Note, The Password Protection template is part of the content and can be imported into CMS with content.
You edit the layout for this template and can use it for your pages with a password, meaning you do not add any password into the template made with the desktop application as the password is added directly in CMS admin in the Page Settings of the Nicepage Editor Plugin.
You can also read about Password Protection in WordPress and Password Protection in Joomla.

Please let us know in case you have any other questions.

Sincerely,
Anna.
