SEO settings not being used?

Ask a Question

Facebook's og:title and og:description are being taken from the first text on the home page and not from the title and description I have entered in the Page Properties: SEO tab in the WordPress plugin.

The SEO settings are remembered but they are ignored. Surely the SEO text should override?

Is this a bug?

(I do use All in one SEO plugin but deactivating this makes no different so it's nothing to do with that.)

Hi Alan,

Sorry for the delay. The og:title displays the page name. This is behavior by design. Our developers are aware about the issue with og:description in WordPress. The fix will be available in future updates. But unfortunately, I cannot say when.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks Olivia.

Has anyone else here found a way round this? I really need to be able to control the og:description rather than have it pick up whatever the first text on the page happens to be.

I think there is a workaround.

In the Page settings, SEO tab, Nicepage is ignoring the Description (and Title, I think). However, meta tags can be added to the HTML tab and as they are placed lower down in the page, Facebook uses them, overriding the wrong ones higher up.

<meta property content>
<meta property content>

Does that look OK to you, Olivia?

On a similar note, I only have a Nicepage home page and the rest are standard WordPress pages and posts. In trying to set up the SEO for those. I can't see where the image used for Facebook is coming from (other than it seems to be part of the theme). It's the site's main logo but I can't see where in the Nicepage Desktop where this is set. There's no way to set any SEO graphic in the Site settings so where is it being set? I can't see that it's being set anywhere in WordPress or in AIOSEO so what am I missing?

Ah. I think this is essentially the same problem as with the description: the Nicepage template picks up the first graphic on the page, which will usually be the site logo in the header

As a workaround, if I add:

<meta property content>

to the Site settings, HTML tab, meta tags, then that's the image that's used on all pages.

I think the problem still exists that this will define the image for all pages

I'm using All in One SEO (2 million+ active installs) but I suspect Yoast (5 million+ active installs) will be the same and Nicepage needs to work properly with these and allow these plugins to control the SEO if they are installed.

Hi Alan,

Our developers will change the behavior for og: description in WP. Og: description will be taken from Nicepage description (if you set it). The fix will be available in one of the next updates.

Regarding other questions, we are currently discussing them.

Thanks for being with Nicepage.

I look forward for this fix. This is the major issue I have with Nicepage currently. The Open Graph (OG) and other SEO meta that are ignored.

I think it was fixed in 2.17 or 2.18 but I've not checked yet.

ETA: Just checked: 2.17:

WordPress: SEO Title for the first page is now applied to the Front Page.

I think this is it but still to check.

Nicepage 2.17: June 11, 2020 - List Repeater. Table Released. - Nicepage Documentation

I think there is still a major issue with Nicepage and its conflict with SEO plugins.

I posted this elsewhere but have done a bit more troubleshooting and the issue is not with Jetpack but purely with Nicepage adding in OpenGraph tags after my SEO plugin has. On Nicepage pages, I could add the description I want on the page to the Nicepage SEO settings but it also seems to be adding its own SEO settings to non-Nicepage pages as well - I can't add SEO settings to those pages because there is no way of doing this. I could turn them into Nicepages but there is at least one I don't want to do that with.

If Nicepage can't automatically detect that All in One SEO or Yoast, etc is handling OpenGraph (as Jetpack does), then there has to be a way of manually disabling Nicepage from doing this - even if that's adding code to finctions.php for the theme.

Is anyone else seeing this same issue? Is there an SEO plugin that Nicepage works properly with?

I think one way of doing this is to simply comment out this line in library/seo.php:

add_action('wp_head', 'theme_og_meta_tags', 5);

This seems to work (it stops the duplicate og: tags being added to the page head) but it would be good if Nicepage provided a way of disabling this either automatically or manually rather than having to edit code.

Is there a better way or can this please be added as an urgent request to the wishlist?

Hi,

There is an option to disable theme Open Graph meta tags under the WP Appearance >> Customize >> SEO
Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Ive brought up adding open graph settings into the SEO section but I don't know if anyone from Nicepage took my suggestion down? that was months ago. There is noway to select the image for open graph without adding it manually to the header

I use All in One SEO (similar to Yoast, I think) - if you disable the SEO ij Nicepage (as Olivia said), you can let the plugin control all SEO settings - that gives far greater control, including Twitter Card and Facebook OpenGraph titles, description and images.

Thanks that is a great plugin for Wordpress.... I want to get away from using Wordpress because the websites get hacked, need updates and are generally a pain in the ass. Nicepage desktop is the best contender to replace Wordpress but it's missing some key basic features which I know will be added eventually if we remind them they are needed.
