Please enable Joomla Multilingual feature:
In System → Manage → Languages, install the languages you need.
Enable the Language Filter plugin (System → Plugins).
Set "Remove URL Language Code" = No
Set "SEO-friendly URL Language Code" = Yes
Create Content Languages (System → Languages → Content Languages). Example: English (en), German (de).

Hello Anna,
Thanks for the reply.
Are these instructions referring to using the built-in Joomla language switcher or the Nicepage language feature?
Warmly,
Rotem
Hello Rotem,
Correctly noticed, Joomla settings refer to Joomla’s built-in multilingual system.
If you use the Nicepage plugin's Multilanguage feature, the URLs will follow Nicepage’s method and look like ?lang=en.
If your site has Joomla native articles included, then you will need to integrate the Joomla language switcher too.
