Ask a Question

I'm having trouble creating regular templates for Joomla with module positions. I've read another post that had issues; possible future video on module positions ? can find one. So whats the trick ?

So far i've only seen a menu position. when I try to play with Add + Position and Shortcode, i've had no luck. can't get the export the work.

Can someone get me going in the right direction ?

Hi invis13,

The Positiin&Sidebar control creates a regular Joomla module position where you can insert modules.
You can see two templates in Nicepage Desktop: Blog and Post. Ther are the base for the theme. The Blog template is for blog layout and Post template is for all other pages. So, if you want to set up a theme with positions you should start with templates. Open a template and enable Sidebar:

enable-sidebar.png

This control creates joomla module position called position-sidebar where you can insert joomla modules after you install this theme in Joomla.

In order to add modules above or below the content area simply insert additional Section, add Grid into this Section if needed and add more position&sidebar controls and set position name for each control under the control's settings.

Please keep us posted about the progress.

Thank you,
Olivia

Ok,

That makes sense now that it's explained. So I made a quick template "theme" with a grid in a section and added four named positions. I exported it as a theme and made it the default template. I went to view template and its there, but no visible or named positions. just an image of my homepage and content.

So next I went into the modules and made a few, I made a Login position and an HTML box position just to test it. The positions were there and I assigned them and published them. Nothing showed up. Is this because of my previous installation of the full theme and content that was previously done ? If I want a theme only do i need to start that way without the Nice Page plugin on the site at all? I'm going to try starting all over from scratch and see what happens without the nicepage plugin or content, but any info the topic would be helpful to what is going on there.

Thanks

Hi Scott,

Let's try again :)
Nicepage allows you to create and further use theme and content separately. You can see two templates: Post and Blog on the Nicepage Desktop dashboard and "Theme" export option. These two templates (Pos and Blog), as well as Header (with Menu) and Footer, are Theme elements.

The Pages that you can create in Nicepage Desktop or with Nicepage plugin for joomla are Content elements (joomla articles). In Joomla you cannot insert module position into the content. Module positions are theme elements.

Nicepage works exactly the same. If you want to display some joomla position on all pages of your website you should add Position&Sidebar control to the Post and Blog Templates. Then export "Theme" or "Theme with Content", install theme and activate it.

For example, open Post Template and enable Sidebar:

enable-sidebar.png

Sidebar creates module position called position-sidebar. Once you export Nicepage project as Joomla theme and install it on your joomla you will be able to use this module position.
If you want more positions simply add a new Section(s) above or below Section with content controls, then insert Grid and then Position&Sidebars controls inside each cell, specify position name for each Position&Siddebar control and export project as "Theme". This will help you to create additional positions similar to Artisteer themes. Please note that if you want to see these positions on all website pages including Blog you should copy or add from scratch positions with the same names on the Blog Template too.

let's consider another situation when you're working with Nicepage Content (you create Pages) only and you're using third-party joomla theme. Nicepage allows adding Position&Sidebars control to the Sections on the created pages (with plugin or in Nicepage Desktop). But as mentioned above, Pages are Content and Content is an article which cannot create module position. What to do in this case? You have some third-party theme installed on your website and activated. This theme includes some module positions. So, when you add Position&Sidebars control into the content you can specify the name of the existing theme position and display modules from this position inside content. It is something like built-in joomla {loadposition} shortcode.

From your previous message, I assume that you added Position&Sidebars control on the created page and imported it as Content. Content does not create module positions. Therefore you cannot see the created position in joomla. But if you install the theme too, you will see your positions. As an alternative, please specify the name of the position existing in the theme used on your website.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank you,
Olivia

Thanks Olivia,

It's coming together. The problem I had wasn't content related, but I stopped having problems with the theme after I went and removed the nicepage component from the site and started over. As of now I'm I'm experimenting with making corrections on new themes. Your last post however opened up the concept of using sections rather than gridding all the positions together in one section, which is what i've been doing.

Very cool software in many ways. Like some people, my goal is keep things simple for a variety of reasons. I use joomla in a govt environment where i've had 20 sites running with hundreds of Joomla Sections, thousand of article pages connected to many hundreds of categories. My Blog pages are done with Easy Blog and then a few components or plugins when needed. Otherwise I use Joomla to do the rest of the work handling the content. Which is why i'm interested in the theme part mainly. Artisteer was fine until the Dynamic pages needed improvement and SEO etc.

My job is no so much designing but managing content and thousands of PDF files as well. This will be great when I get the hang of it. I think what you gave me now will get me going for now.

Thanks

Hello,
Regarding positions within the template, I want to add a Sigplus gallery module to the template, as Nicepage doesn't have a good gallery section and I want to place the module so that it appears on the Gallery page using the Nicepage Template. However, when I activate Positions and Sidebar in the blog or the post template, the gallery appears in the sidebar not in the main section of the template.

How can I get the gallery to appear in the main body of the template?

Thank you,

Hi Belinda,

Could you please create a private topic where you could provide a link to your site. Is it Joomla, right?
You can watch this video about Joomla positions:
https://nicepage.com/doc/article/6700/

Maybe you need to add a gallery shortcode? In this case use the Shortcode control in the content.

OK, I will create a private topic, but I followed the video already.

So far, I can get Sigplus to appear on a Blog page, if I set the menu for the gallery to Category Blog, and make sure the article is linked to the category. However, no blog text appears above it, even if the joomla articles are linked to the correct blog.

Alternatively, I have also tried by setting the menu gallery link as single article instead and directed the menu to the gallery page. The Sigplus module fails to appear on the gallery page, below post text already there. If there is no post text within the article, then Sigplus sometimes appears.

I will keep trying and then if tomorrow I am still struggling I will create a private topic.
