Articles being renamed in Joomla

this is due to the "importing mechanism" but i don't undertand why either. Even if you tick "replace existing" instead of replacing the existing articles it just creates duplicates

content is built within the site, so the plugin. I only use nicepage desktop for the header and footer really.

Usually, Nicepage adds an index to the page name while importing content through the plugin. Or if you're trying to add the new page with the existing name.
At what moment the issue happens on your side? Please describe the issue in more details.

Well I do have articles with the same name but they are in different categories for sorting. For example I have many articles named welcome.

Now I see what you mean.
Nicepage editor does not know anything about Joomla's categories. This is Joomla's functionality. Nicepage adds index to duplicated pages because it does not support two pages with the same name.
