Gap Between Menu Items

I started with a blank theme, and added a menu with background color and 5 menu items. In the editor it shows there is no space between the items and in the settings it says padding is "0" - but when I preview - there are little white gaps of padding between each item. How can I fix this?

Is this what you want? Please note, as a work around I have put a colored shape behind the menu, so if you remove the shape you will see the gaps.
