I want to set up a small shop on a joomla site. It's not clear to me yet whether I can do this with Nicepage alone or do I need Virtuemart?

Yes, it is possible to make an online store only with Nicepage. To do this, you should add products and integrate a payment system (PayPal or Stripe) in the Nicepage extension. Please check the following article: https://nicepage.com/doc/442589/e-commerce-cms-plugin
