Google maps not working, says API needed, instructions are unusable

Just found out the regular Google maps block no longer works. I tried following Google's instructions to set it up and wasn't able to find the Share Map in the dropdown. I apparently have to set up an API but as usual, Google's explanation on how to do it is confusing and convoluted. This should be simple but Google makes it horrendously complex and I have to sign up for an account. They give vague information about cost but I have no idea on how much it is.
Can you sort this out with simple directions that can actually be followed? I've been developing sites since 1996 but this has me in complete confusion.

Hi, few minutes ago I completed a new site & I found google map block is working fine with the "Address only". I mean if I input address then it's showing the map. If in case your end it's not working then use it in a alternative way. Visit map.google.com & search for your business/location then click share button then use "iframe" option & copy the code then in nicepage take a html block & paste the code. Now you can easily see your google map there. Thanks.
