Unruly Sub-menus

Setting up a sub-menu is straight forward, but managing the active/hover states seems to me to be rather unruly. F.i. I have set sub-menu background in my project to white, but it keeps coming up in grey. Also the active state should be blue, but stays black and another submenu item has a grey back. All submenus are scrolling down on the same page.
