I want it to start automatically, but only play once

For doing this, please check Automatically start to play and uncheck Play video in loop.

I want it stretched to fill the screen - it's a real pain as the options disappear as soon as you click on "Expand to Background".

Indeed, these options are not available for background videos. By default, background videos start to play automatically, they are mute and play in loop.

Also, it is really frustrating that videos have a maximum size of 10 MB.

Indeed, we have such a limit so our server wouldn't be overloaded. As an alternative, you can upload your video to a video hosting (or on your own hosting) and insert the URL of the video.

Background Videos always start playing automatically. The only thing you can do is to collapse Background to Video and uncheck Automatically start to play.
