The link can be copied actually, but with the mouse command, in your preview, it is defined as a clickable element (hand cursor)
Exactly the words Sign the petition are assigned a button function, you cannot copy the text (Sign the petition) from inside of the button, only the link.

Why are all links turned into "buttons"? I want people to be able to directly copy the text by highlighting and not having to right click and select save link address. Is there another way to create a link that does not function like a button? No other software I've used automatically turns links into buttons.

You can simply insert the link as a part of the text with no additional function, like here

If you highlight the phrase and add the hyperlink to it with function - it automatically turns into a button.
Simply click on the button will set an action (open the link in the new window), a right button mouse click will allow choosing an action(copy, save etc)
