Custom search.php (search results)

Hello,
I know this has been asked several times, but with the custom themes, I'd like to ask once again ;)

Is there a chance that we'll have the option to make a custom search.php (search results page) for Wordpress? The build-in one is literally a single line and it makes sense wanting a different layout for blog/news and search results. I've ended up replacing it manually, but that's not exactly an ideal solution.
On a similar note, updating the build-in version so it can be further refined by other plugins and/or WP settings would be a nice thing as well.

Thanks for what I sadly have to call a boilerplate reply.
Could you at least indicate if we can expect either custom search.php or at least updated/fixed one in the next, let's say, three to five feature updates (i.e. whether it is actively being worked on, planned or neither)? I don't want to be that "WHEN?!!?" type of customer, but I'd still like to know if I can realistically expect this in the foreseeable future ;)
