Ask a Question

How to create a hyperlink to a file from text or buttons?
I'm working with Nicepage Desktop and only seem to create links to pages or sections, not files...
Do I miss something here?

Hi Dick,

You need to upload the file to the hosting and then in the button or link you can add the full URL to the hosted file.

What do you mean by 'upload the file to the hosting'?
Is that a folder on my harddisk or is it the server where my site is hosted?
Isn't it possible to link to a file on local harddisk?

Hi Dick,

That is your server, where the site is hosted. You cannot link to the local file on your computer as your site visitors should be able to access that file. And for that reason, the file should be available in the internet.

Hi Hella, it is not as logical as you state it...
How can I link to files on the webserver while working in the desktop software? How do I get this URL's?

Other/most software to create websites I worked with (like Artisteer, WYSIWYG, EZ Generator), has the ability to link to local files on my computer. In the process of publishing the website directly from this software, all linked files are copied as well.
So do I understand it well that Nicepage lacks this feature? Do I have to upload the website and all linked files one by one through FTP? That would be not very sophisticated and a real bummer for me...

Hi Dick,

Artisteer never had such feature. The logic is following: when you link to the file on your computer, the link is set to the local harddrive that cannot be accessed from the internet (unless you have the server at home). So you have a hosting where your site will be hosted, correct? You need to upload the file to the hosting. Then you can get the link to this file on hosting. That will be like http://yoursite.com/file.pdf and this link should be inserted as the link in the button while you are creating the page in the software. So when you export the site and install on the hosting, this link that you have added in the button will be pointing to the file that is already hosted in the internet and can be accessible for the site users.
My example with uploading the file on your hosting is just an example. You can upload it to any cloud like dropbox or google drive, no matter, just get a link to the file that is hosted and is accessible from the internet.

Hi Hella, so I understand it well that there is no (nor will be a future) publish feature for non Wordpress/Joomla websites.
There always will remain a lot of manual operations to perform to get it all working.
Am I right?

Hi Dick,

Yes, if you want to have the HTML site and to have links to some files in it, then you need to do some actions to achieve that. In you case it is uploading the file to cloud and inserting the link in the editor before exporting. That is not a complex task, but it is the only way to make the file become accessible for the site visitors.

As a user I understand you frustration. Images work because all web servers create an images folder. There is not a specific document folder. When you link to a document on your hard drive the link is c:\whaterver\filename the server drive is not the same. Its easy to do, create a folder on the server for the documents and upload them to the folder. Then create your href url to : https/yourwebsite/document folder/document name. It's not rocket science!

Indeed, no rocket science, but I still feel that it's a very tedious way for modern software to create hyperlinks to files on a website. As I mentioned earlier I've worked with other older desktop software that could handle this operation off line completely. At the process of publishing, this other software took care of copying the site with all the files that were hyperlinked to as well as setting the hyperlinks right. No need for accessing the webserver through FTP first to manually copy the files and/or create hyperlinks.
Nicepage - being todays' software in full development - should in my opinion offer user friendly tools, not only to build nice websites with but also to publish them with, hassle free.

Hi,

Thanks for all your comments. We have added this request to our wishlist. But actually it is not a big deal to upload the file to the cloud and simply add this URL into the application before exporting.

Hi,
I am uploading a lot of documents for parish councils - every few weeks. (Minutes, Agendas etc.)
If Nicepage had an easy way of uploading documents and making links to the documents it would be great.
Something like add document in the 'link settings' dialog box?
I don't mind exporting the project and uploading it with the new documents included!!!
Thank you.

You may think it's not a big deal but believe it or not there are a lot of people who build off line because they have no internet access for some reason or other then want to upload a site when it's complete after having tested it . it's crazy to have to make a page live and copy the hyperlink before you can add the link.
