Ask a Question

I just downloaded the upgrade to 3.2 and lo and behold the group selection displays the block designs instead. I couldn't select a group and insert inside a grid on the footer.

I pinched myself to see if I was awake, stood up and stretched, came back and closed the program then opened it again.

Same problem still was happening. It should be easy to duplicate. Just select Groups and try to add one.

Doug,

Please provide your project and a screenshot of what you are trying to achieve.

Please note that there is no grouping in Nicepage, and you need to add a grid, then a group, then Elements into that group.

Please see the attached sample project. Is that what is needed?

I know there isn't any 'grouping' per se. It's just 'groups' (which used to be container). That has changed apparently and cause of my confusion.

you need to add a grid, then a group, then Elements into that group.

No ... you have this wrong. You can drop a group into a block without any grid required. A 'group' is an element. But with the blocks now showing under the group selection it implies even a block is an element. Go figure.

For an app designed to work for a newbie, the UI getting too cluttered and busy. It's even becoming difficult for me after using Artisteer, Themler and now this. The version has jumped from 0.9 (or 8) to 3.5.x in less than a year alluding to more maturity than actually exist in the product. It shouldn't be out of beta yet.

An example of the clutter was my initial confusion over the group element. It had been a single selection not too long ago and selecting it would create a group where ever your cursor was on the canvas inside a block. Ok, adding the additional prefigured groups make sense, but appending the block and design options would be the third repetition of the same selections between the Block/Element selections.

This is simpler? Are all of the selections to have three different places to be found?

The UI designer is apparently eating too many 'shrooms .

Hi,

Do you mean these sections in the Group element menu?

block-examples.png

Both these sections are available below each control. These are Block sketches with the chosen control and designed Blocks with the same control. In our case, these are Blocks with Groups. But you can still select just a Group element or anything else and add it to the Block:

Hi Olivia,

Ok, let's start with the 'group' selection. It has group selections, then the block options on the same menu.

Can you create a group and insert a block into it? No. The two submenu selections are not compatible or similar at all. So the Block selections below the group options should not exist at all there. Blocks should be totally separate in the Block column. It should not have all categories in it, or the column title should be All Categories instead of Block if nothing else. Elements should display elements relevant to the area of focus and change as the focus changes.

Hover over the header, show the header control optionis, Same with the Footer. Hovering over a block, display grid, group options. Then after a block or group is chosen, display the active elements for the grid or group. Put the builder on the top level menu. It's buried all the way at the bottom. What would suit a novice best? The builder options should be front and center on the top level menu. That would be the foremost selection for the novice first time buyer. I can select the other columns separately.

From the + New Website menu, show an option to use the builder or a start with blank site

The developers should seek more information on Human- Computer Interaction (HCI) articles. I doubt anyone would be interest in my 500 pg textbook on the subject. It would certainly help to clean up the presentation.

Hi Doug,

Thank you for your comments.

Ok, let's start with the 'group' selection. It has group selections, then the block options on the same menu.

You see the Blocks with Groups. Just like when you open the Tabs menu you see the ready-made Blocks with Tabs, the same in Form, etc. According to our usability test, this is a useful option. Instead of creating a Block from scratch, you can add a ready-made Block with the desired control.

Olivia,

You're missing the point. The menu selection is 'Groups', Not 'Groups & Blocks'.

The menu selection should only show options for Groups. The addition of Blocks is illogical and doesn't follow the "Don’t repeat yourself (DRY)" method of programming. Mixing and matching duplicated areas creates chaos and reeks of the spaghetti code that all too often appeared in BASIC.

From an GUI design layout, it's a bad practice because you fall down the rat hole of more code, and more data points get mixed in all over the code increasing the complexity of simple changes.

This is meant to be constructive criticism and not noise from the masses.
